New Year gift
I picked up the mail today and opened a letter from my wonderful endo (Dr. Elizabeth Spatola of St. Joseph's in Nashua NH).Inside it was the latest A1C test and (....drumroll....) my A1c is 6.6%
For me this is the lowest value I've ever had, and I'm more thankful than I can say.
In 2009, I'd like to keep my A1C at around 6.6% for the year. I'm grateful that I can use technology (insulin pump, Dexcom CGM) and rely on many people at TuDiabetes and the entire Diabetes OC (online community) for support and advice. Without all my friends in the d-blogosphere, I think living with diabetes would be a lot harder.
In 2009 may your blood sugars be steady and your diabetes frustrations be few.
For all of us I hope to see some exciting diabetes research development in the next 12 months.

That is so awesome Bernard! I know my next appt. will probably be the highest A1c I've had in over 10 years but I also know I need to OWN it in order to fix it ... butterflies and procrastination though...have to start fresh for '09...Keep Pressin'! Great job!

WOW!! Great A1C! Can you pinpoint something you did or did not do that contributed to such a great result? Just curious if you changed something recently that contributed to the awesome results!?
Congrats! that's a great a1c, def. something to be proud of.

This is due to a number of things over the last 15+ months. In April 2008, my A1C was 8.2%, so this isn't a sudden change.
Having the Dexcom is a big help because it lets me focus on a lower target without too many lows. Without it, I'd be forced to let my numbers run higher.
Working with Gary Scheiner was huge. He's helped me tweak basal and bolus settings and also given me strategies for reducing post-prandial highs.
Symlin helped for a while. But in the end it was too difficult to continue using (nausea and sometimes horrible lows).
As I said in the original post, meeting and talking with folks also gave me lots of tips to avoid problems and make living with diabetes a lot longer. Hence my resolution to get together with a group of folks at least 3 times in 2009.
Happy New Year! And congratulations.
Bernard...thanks for the response. I really appreciate you taking the time!
Bernard, congrats. What a great way to start the new year.
