OneTouch UltraLink meter
We finally have a replacement wireless meter for the Minimed Paradigm insulin pumps. The new model is the OneTouch UltraLink meter.
It uses existing OneTouch Ultra test strips, with 5 seconds before you have a reading. The meter lets you flag readings as before or after meal so you can get these averages. It stores up to 500 readings and runs on 2 AAA batteries. For more details read the 90-page user's manual (PDF).The meter is now being shipped with new Medtronic Paradigm insulin pumps. Those of you who already have a Paradigm pump will have to wait a little longer.
According to the Medtronic FAQ page for this meter
... we plan on sending U.S. customers who own a MiniMed Paradigm 512, 712, 515, or 715 insulin pump a OneTouch® UltraLink™ Meter at no charge later this year.Minimed gives you a way to find out when you'll get your meter.
This meter is only available to US customers. Outside the US, the replacement meter will be from Bayer. Currently there's no word on the release date for the Bayer wireless meter.
If you have, or want to use, the OneTouch diabetes management software you'll need the latest version (2.3.2). You'll also need to download the newest meter driver to your PC so the UltraLink can be recognized.

Very smart use of technology on their part. This will make things so much easier for tons of people.

I've updated the post with a link showing where you can track when you'll get the meter from Minimed.
Try it out and let me know if it works.
Hi Bernard,
Meters have already started shipping for those of us with pumps, I get mine tomorrow ;)
Courtney
Yeah, I posted about this on my blog last Friday or Saturday. They have already started shipping these to their customers.
Mine shipped on the 24th and should be to me tomorrow or the next day.
Don't let the 'later this year' scare you. Your meter is probably on its way now!
Hi Bernard, I just read this post yesterday, and received my meter today! It is just one step, but really nice in terms of making things more seamless. I never imagined, when I was 10 years old and newly diagnosed, that such things would be possible. It is too hard to let myself think there could be a cure soon, but little things like this make such a difference. Thank you for being able to face this squarely and do such an excellent job of keeping abreast of everything. I'm normally a very brave person, but this is one subject that just makes me crumble. Your blog makes it easier for me.
Er... by "yesterday" I meant "today"!
Hmm One Touch is J&J so is Animas. I wounder if J&J will work the magic to their pump.
Also it will be interesting to see if the thing can keep time. Our One Touch Ultra Smart meters are rock stupic at telling time.

I got mine yesterday!! I am so excited. I LOVE it :)
I got mine yesterday and I have the cable from a previous One Touch meter and while it fits I can't get it to work with the software from One Touch software. If I can't get it to work today I am going to call One Touch and see what they can do to help.
Bernard,
I have downloaded the driver as well as the updated software. It still won't find the meter, but I will call One Touch today and see what they can do to help me out and I will post what they say.

I received my meter yesterday but I was unhappy to see it still doesn't have a darn internal light.
The technology is not cutting edge but is nice. I stopped using the original one delivered with my pump because I couldn't deal with the lack of a light in several enviornments.
I use the Freestyle Flash which is about 1/3 the sise, strips are a littke cheaper and..IT HAS A LIGHT!
Once you have one they will replace it free for life regardless!
Bernard,
Not sure how you found my blog, but thanks for the comment. Great post btw. When I typed in my info it said I'm not eligible for the upgrade. Too bad because I hate the BD one that goes with the 722 that I wear. Maybe later? Do you know? Anyway, I love your blog and I'm adding you to my bloglines.
I received mine the other day. It's nice to have a new meter, but frankly I don't find this feature particularly useful. Though I can see how others would find it useful. I wish they'd put the LED light in, like the one in my OneTouch UltrSmart. I find that quite useful.
Oh well! Have a great day.
And yet it still has no backlight.
I am still going to use the Nova Maxlink because it takes only 1/3 of a microliter while this one takes a full microliter.
Just called Minimed to find out why I didn't get my meter (since I have a 722, and am supposed to get a free meter), only to find out that Kaiser (biggest HMO in California) **does not allow** its patients to get the free meter.
Minimed is not ready yet to sell the meters, and lifescan claims that they don't sell meters, they just make them
So the technology is great, but there's still enough cracks to fall through :)
Good luck to us all

You should start an appeal with Kaiser. Tell them that you'll contact the California Attorney General's office. If you can't really use the pump without the new meter, then I think you could argue that Kaiser is denying you some aspect of coverage. It's worth a try.
If they don't give you the meter, then do write a letter to the AG. It might just work.
Hi I have Paradigm 722 in Puerto Rico
at the moment i was experimenting a SOMOGI effect 5 months later to start on the pump. This situation starts when i try to regulate my glucose levels upgrading my basal 2.0 on day 3.0 on night. Actually i use 2.0 during day and 1.8 on night and my AHC1 go lower with less than 90 insulin units per day. So be carefull of use too much insulin on pumps
