Novocell - stem cells control diabetes in mice
I see this news is being reported in several places. It's interesting because there's been so much talk about using stem cells to treat diabetes. Now Novocell says that they were able to use human stem cells to control diabetes in mice.
Now before you say anything, I do know that things which work for mice don't always work for humans(PDF). But unfortunately most of this research does use NOD (Non obese diabetic) mice, so we're stuck with that for the present.
This approach is not yet perfect because some of the mice developed tumors. I'm guessing that we won't see anything come out of these labs for several years.

another good day for diabetic mice!! This is very exciting; I hadn't seen the news yet.
the question i have is: how do they know the mice are diabetic to begin with? are they breeding diabetic mice or what?
very cool. i've seen this pop up all over the media. do you have the link to the primary article? i would so love to read it.
here's the abstract

That link I provided to the Wikipedia article on NOD mice says that these mice "exhibit a susceptibility to spontaneous development of automimmune insulin dependent diabetes mellitus". There's something in these mice that causes them to get diabetes or other auto-immune diseases.
These are the same mice that Dr. Faustman and others have used to test cures for type 1 diabetes.
Didn't they artificially create the diabetes in these mice by feeding them a toxin to destroy their beta cells? We still have to come up with a solution to the autoimmunte part of type 1.
Bernard,
Can you email me at WindyCobourne@gmail.com when you get a chance? I have a couple questions for you about Dr. Faustman's research but don't want to cutter up your comment page. Thanks!
Score 1 for the Diabetic Mice!
Meeses don't fail us know!

Is that at DiabetesTalkFest?
That should be really interesting. Unfortunately I'll be at a conference so I won't attend.
