Symlin is now available in pen form
Today Amylin announced that the pen form of Symlin is available.
The SymlinPen 60 can deliver 15, 30, 45, or 60 micrograms per dose, so it's clearly targeted at people with Type 1 diabetes. These doses correspond to 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 units on a standard insulin syringe. The SymlinPen 120 can deliver 60 or 120 micrograms per dose. The pens can be stored at room temperature up to 86 degrees F (30 degrees C) after first use.I have a long blog post about what I've learned from using Symlin. For those of us already on Symlin this is a welcome step forward.
What I'd like to see next (anyone?) is C-peptide in pen form. I'm not holding my breath!

Actually, for what its worth, C-Peptide as a therapeutic is now undergoing clinical trails, just don't expect to see it come from Lilly or Novo -- they can't, Creative Peptides has received 2 patent applications in the U.S. and other countries.
According to Creative Peptides' website, clinical studies in more than 400 type 1 diabetes patients have demonstrated encouraging nerve and kidney efficacy data with no observed C-peptide related adverse reactions. Positive results in a recently completed phase II trial in >160 type 1 diabetes patients with peripheral neuropathy have also been done. Pre-clinical and phase 1 regulatory packages approved by the Swedish Medical Products Agency Production process ready for scale up Formulation studies for once daily administration is currently in progress. Molecular and cellular actions of C-peptide is documented from extensive studies in different in vitro and in vivo models.
Obviously, Phase II and III Human Clinical Trials still need to occur, so it will be a few years before we see anything emerge.
That is great news! Time for me to schedule another appt. with my goofy doc to get a script.
