FDA Approves Symlin Pen
Amylin has announced today that the FDA has approved two Symlin pen models. The pens should be available by December 2007.The SymlinPen 60 can deliver 15, 30, 45, or 60 micrograms per dose, so it's clearly targeted at people with Type 1 diabetes. These doses correspond to 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 units on a standard insulin syringe. The SymlinPen 120 can deliver 60 or 120 micrograms per dose. I like it that the pens can be stored at room temperature (up to 86 degrees).

For me, Symlin has effectively removed the blood sugar spikes that I see after meals. Learning to use Symlin takes time. First there's the nausea. It lasted about 4 weeks for me. Then there's the struggle to figure out how much to reduce your insulin and how long to spread the bolus over to avoid the lows that can be very hard to treat.I'm excited to learn the pen version will be out before too long. That should make it a lot easier to use.

I am VERY excited about this! The pen availability date of December matches with my next endo appointment so expect me to start up with Symlin again then!
I too am excited to hear about this. This is one piece of the "Scott's ready to try Symlin" puzzle.
The other piece is me getting my hands on a CGMS...that I can AFFORD!

As for the Symlin Pen, it looks a lot like the current Byetta pen. I have been attending dinners by the drug company as part of my work. I am also a diabetic of 35 years. They say that the pen will reduce the needle problem(dullness) and the stinging/burning associated with the injections. Symlin has truly been a Godsend to me. Post meal glucose is now almost always normal. Wow!

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Studies and off label use of Symlin for Type 1's who have insulin antibodies(Insulin Resistance) are being done. Have talked to my doc about the possibility of using the Type 2 dosing since I have insulin antibodies. Will most likely start a dose escalation soon. Seems that some folks after being on it a while loose some of the benefit of the feeling of fullness also. Possibility for dose escalation there.

is that a normal dossage for some people? I'm taking 5mcg 2x daily.

So happy to hear this news. Symlin has been doing me a lot of good since I started back up on it, and I can't wait for the pen so I can stop losing all of my syringes in the darkest depths of my purse.
