Diabetes365 day 3 Wednesday, October 10, 2007

For now, I'm trying to take diabetes365 photos at slightly later times in my diabetes day. At some stage, I'll switch to a different approach to documenting what it's like to live with diabetes 24 by 7 by 365.

Diabetes 365 day 3 Oct. 10th 2007

I have a small scales at home that I use mostly for breakfast. Most packaged food now has nutrition labels which lets me see the carbohydrate content for a specific weight. By adding the carbs for all the foods together and using an insulin to carbohydrate ratio (I:C) I can figure out how much insulin I need to take. The I:C value is different for everyone with diabetes, it can even vary for the same person at different times of the day.

I've been using Symlin for about a year. It's a drug that's I inject shortly before meals. It slows down the release of food from my stomach and makes me feel full. Both contribute to better blood sugar control, though it can cause terrible low blood sugar reactions.

Insulin (and Symlin) are not cures for diabetes. They just allow people with diabetes to control their blood sugars.

I really need to buy one of those food scales...

I tried Symlin and hated it because it hurt so much, but I wonder if the new Symlin pen will help. I think I might try it out just one more time before completely giving up.

I'm curious about Symlin, too, but the scary lows, well, scare me. I like this picture. It captures the measuring well. I'm glad you're doing the project.

I do use a food scale, but even using insulin I don't think I could make that breakfast work for me. Too many very fast carbs.

One piece of high fiber whole wheat toast with peanut butter. You betcha. But not that!

The timing is just too unpredictable and if I go up too high, even if the insulin knocks it down, it's likely to knock it down too low.

Small inputs make for small mistakes as the Good Doctor says. . .

Symlin seems incredible... if only I weren't scared of it! I think I may be willing to try it once I get a CGMS... your graph the other day sure was impressive! I'm with Jenny on the morning carbs thing; without the help of Symlin, they just don't work for me.

Boy does that cereal look yummy, though.

Speaking of breakfast..... Does anyone have a decent sugar-free maple syrup. I have been just using "real" maple syrup the past few years. My doctors have encouraged me to eat whatever and bolus accordingly. This works for most everything (except syrup and chinese food).
