Too much TV bad for diabetes control
This isn't a big surprise to me, but a new study that will be published in Diabetes Care shows that children with Type 1 diabetes who watch more TV have poorer control. My guess would be that's because they lose the opportunity for extra activity, and probably snack some more, I guess I'll have to read the full report when it's available.
The numbers are pretty amazing. The number of hours per day of TV watched, is tied to the average A1c for the children in the study.
- Less than 1 hour per day, A1c average is 8.2
- Up to 2 hours, A1c is 8.4
- Up to 3 hours, A1c is 8.7
- Up to 4 hours, A1c is 8.8
- More than 4 hours per day, A1c is 9.5

That is...wow.
(And gives some insight into children developing type 2, I suppose.)
I read about this this morning. It's pretty much a no brainer, but I think showing it through an article might get parents who let their D kids watch a lot of TV perk up and take notice that lack of exercise = higher a1C's.
This will be included among my nominees for "Dumb diabetes research" for 2007 ... uh duhh ... how many thousands of dollars and months of research went into this dumb study only to prove the obvious. The bigger question, though, is what if anything, does this study do to improve the lives of people who already have diabetes or prevent diabetes from occurring ... nothing!
It worked, but im not sure what you use but I had to install firefox to import evrything
