Stay AWAY from this game

So we have a good friend that we affectionately call Uncle Roger. And this last Christmas, Roger came round and gave us an innocuous looking game called Blokus.

Wisely, we didn't open it for a few days. Then a few days before Christmas itself, we opened this Pandora's box of a game.

Since then, we've played this game too many times to mention. We had family staying with us over the New Year. We played all evening until around 11:30 PM. Then we stopped to cheer in the arrival of 2007. Off to bed and we were around the table playing again by 10 AM the next morning.

We ate breakfast while playing Blokus. Ate leftover lunch and played. Different people came to the table (it's a 4-player game) and played. Different teams paired up and played. Our girls both hold their own when playing against their geeky parents.

So...

If you're looking for something to while away those long winter nights. And you enjoy board games with really simple rules. And you don't mind being frustrated. Then this is the game for you.

And if you're interested, here's a picture from this evenings game.

This sounds perfect for my family. We'll have to look into it. Thanks for the idea!

I am a terribly UNcompetitive person..... I feel sorry for others IF I win. Talk about stupid, but I grew up in a family where everything was turned into a "contest"! So games are out for me! I just wanted to say that the photo of your two girls was beautiful! I had a good Chinese friend called Chyou Lin - Bernard you do not happen to know what that name means? Usually Chinese names have a message. I never asked her and now we have lost contact.

I LOVE Blokus! My sister adn her fiance came to town and I think we played Blokus for 70 percent of the time. The fun thing is my six year-old daughter can play along with the adults (although we crush her early in the game)! I am not normally very competetive, but this is game is SOOO much fun for everyone.

By the way, We called this game Blow-Kus for so long and my future brother-in-law called us on the phone after his trip to see us and pointed out that "the game is played using a series of blocks, so isn't it Block-us." Good point I thought. Then he asked around all his smart friends and found out that it is German and is indeed pronounced Blow-Kus.

Wendy,

Another reason for calling it Block-us, is because you can play by blocking other players.

We've settled on Blow-Kus in our family.

By the way, if you look at the Wikipedia site I posted, you can also find out ways to play variants of this game.

Bernard,
I hope you continue the tradition of your family sitting down to play games. When I was growing up, we always did it on Tuesday nights - and your post has left me with many tear-filled memories.
And, you kids are so sweet!!
Kathy

Blokus rocks.
We're also a big fan of "Apples to Apples." Also lots of fun, but a completely different kind of game.

Well worth checking out, though.
